We have two Italian Greyhounds (affectionately referred to as IGs). Dixie was two when we brought Yankee house. I read that IGs are happier with another animal and thought that another IG would be half as significantly difficulty and twice as significantly exciting. Immediately after a couple of days of establishing a pack order the two became wonderful close friends.

For these not familiar with IGs, they are about scale of the famous racetrack breed. In their finest type they appear half-starved, even though it may look cruel to most pet owners, thats when they are the most active and definitely happiest. A pound or two slows them down tremendously and even becomes dangerous.

They are fearless leapers. No matter how numerous occasions I try to explain to them Newtons Laws of Gravity, it does no good. Heart-stopping stories abound more than the web chat rooms about their Superman like tendencies. The additional weight increases the danger of broken bones.

They are also tremendous jumpers. In her hey-day Dixie could jump straight up over 6 feet high to grab a snack. At will she could jump flat-footed on to the dining space table, landing as soft as a butterfly with sore feet.

But more than something, these long thin legs had been meant for speed. Sadly, they can run quicker than they can consider. IGs turn into single focused when running. Twice I have nearly had a heart attack as they ran complete speed into every single other from opposite directions, tumbling like out of handle race cars. Chasing following one yet another, theyd scrape the trees so close that bark literally flew off and misjudging turns, wiping-out in to brick walls and other immoveable objects was a prevalent occurrence.

Nicely, one day the inevitable ultimately occurred, Dixie went into a door facing and snapped her left leg. The break was clean by means of. Her tiny paw dangling 90 degrees from just beneath her knee told me every little thing I didnt want to know.

I did the best I could to immobilize it as my wife known as the vet. As soon as we got there they took her back for x-rays. She was certainly in a lot of pain but had quit yelping following I first picked her up. In reality, she was the calmest of any of us.

My wife was crying simply because of the dog. I was crying because of the bill. If I wouldve recognized how a lot it was going to expense in the lobby I would have cried a lot tougher. This was going to be a massive payday for the vet.

The choices were easy, they could attempt a cast, but it would most likely not set correct due to the fact of the quite tiny, toothpick-thin fibula. The vet suggested a titanium plate and screws.

The surgery alone would run $1,000. The total bill would truly end up more than $1,800. I could have purchased 3 Dixies and a lifetime provide of dog food for that much. My wife got mad since she didnt like my sense of humor, but I wasnt joking. I know the power of the purse, and I have no intention of finding hit by hers once again so I relented.

The subsequent morning they place in the custom created plate and screws. It was genuinely tricky because the screws had to be massive enough to hold issues with each other, but tiny enough not to interrupt blood flow.

More painful (if you can believe that) than the vet bill, was the care and focus Dixie would call for for the subsequent 3 to four months. For the next 3 months she would have to be kept in a crate at all instances.

For the first three weeks when we took her out to go potty we would have to hold on to her. No walking was permitted. It is definitely critical for dogs to discover the best spot to relieve themselves, not any spot will do. People cannot completely appreciate this until they miss an complete displaying of Monday Night Football.

A couple of weeks following the surgery we got a bit of excellent news, the leg was healing fine. She would nevertheless have to be crated, but we could place her on a real tight lead and let her stand on her three excellent legs to go potty. In about two to 3 week intervals immediately after that she was allowed a little much more freedom.

Slowly things got back to normal. The very first month immediately after she got complete clearance to run was rather tiring. Every single jump, every single complete trot run brought held breaths in anticipation of yet another vet trip.

It has taken two full years to get to exactly where she no longer yelps or pulls up after a full run or sharp turn. She has lost a noticeable quantity of her initial burst. She can longer track down Yankee from behind, but they still adore to chase every single other in the backyard and that offers us fantastic pleasure. If youve by no means seen these gracious runners play at full speed then you can't completely appreciate why we went to all the trouble and expense.

My wife loves to display Dixies scar to any individual who comes by. She talks about the entire adventure like it was The Excellent Old Days. Out of fear that my wife will read this report I will state that if I had to do it yet again I would. But I wont like it.
