When the sharp point passes through the cloth, you will find there's small loop from the thread which matches derived from one of side towards the other; in cases like this, though, you will find there's small mechanism beneath the cloth, which grabs the loop and wraps it around another loop, and other thread at the same bit of cloth.
You can certainly still adjust in case you so desire to produce a new look.
