A monograph is usually a specialist work of writing on one subject or an aspect of a subject, oftentimes from one author. The term dates on the 19th century and is taken on the Latin monographia, meaning 'writing on one subject'.Unlike a textbook, which surveys the commonwealth of knowledge in a very area, the main purpose of a monograph is to provide primary research and original scholarship. This information is released at length, distinguishing a monograph from an article. Pertaining to these reasons, publication of a monograph is commonly regarded as crucial for career procession in many academic disciplines. Intended for other researchers and received primarily through libraries, monographs are generally published as individual volumes into a short print control. Librarians feel a monograph to be a nonserial publication whole in one volume (book) or a finite matters of amounts. Thus it differs from a serial publication which includes a magazine, journal, or newspaper. Book publishers use the term "artist monograph" to indicate books consisting of reproductions of works of art from one artist, as opposed to surveys of art from multi artists.
