So it is with duty. The notion of work varies much among different nations. In one country, if a man doesn't do certain things, people will say he has acted wrongly; while if he does these very things in another country, people will say that he did not act rightly -- and yet we all know that there must be some common idea of work. In exactly the same way, one class of society thinks that certain things are among its responsibility, while if it had to complete these things yet another class thinks quite contrary and would be horrified.

Two ways are left ready to accept us -- the way of the ignorant, who think that there is only 1 way to reality and that all the remainder are inappropriate, and the way of the wise, who admit that, based on our mental constitution or the various planes of existence where we are, duty and morality may vary. The biggest thing is always to know that there are gradations of duty and of morality -- that the duty of one state of life,in one set of circumstances, will not and cannot be that of another.

To illustrate: All good teachers have taught, "Resist not evil," that non - resistance may be the highest moral ideal. We all know that, if your certain amount of us attemptedto put that belief fully in to practice, the whole social fabric would drop to pieces, the wicked would simply take possession of our lives and our homes, and would do what they like with us. Even if just one time of such non - weight were practised, it'd cause disaster. Yet, naturally, within our heart of hearts we have the truth of the training "Resist not evil." This generally seems to us to function as the best ideal; yet to teach this doctrine only will be comparable to condemning a huge part of mankind.

Not just so, it would be making men feel that they certainly were always doing wrong, and cause in them scruples of conscience in every their actions; it'd destroy them, and that constant self - disapproval would breed more vice than every other weakness would. To the man who has begun to hate himself the door to degeneration has already opened; and the exact same is true of a nation.
